Hokitika, also known as the jade country, is a well known location among New Zealanders and the Maori. Also it may be one of the most underrated tourism location in New Zealand. it is one of the most prestigious locations of new that travelers pass through on their way to the iconic locations such as FOX GLACIER and FRANZ JOSEPH GLACIER, unrealizing what this destination has to offer.
The name Hokitika comes from Maori, which means "return in a straight line". The name has a sad story behind it, which is quite interesting and you can read it if you click the link. There are many further interesting stories to Hokitika too, past the times of Maori, when the Englishmen found a goldmine within the location. This town has also preserved its history for young travelers to explore and learn about them.
Soon after the Englishmen finished their gold rush, the riverbeds became more dangerous to exploit. The town however has plenty of Jades stones (Pounamu) which were also exploited by us humans back in the days reducing the numbers over the years. The pounamu can be found by the river beds and the mountains if you are interested in finding them yourself. But, however its a tradition and a culture in New Zealand that only a Maori can pick up these stones as its a part of their tradition. And as a fellow traveler I respect that. And I personally wouldn't walk around river beds in hope to find them. There are some locations along west coast that non-Maoris are not allowed to pick stones from. This is because its a preserved and protected area and belongs to Prestigious Maori families. So beware before you trespass.
If you are keen on getting a hold of the stones there are places in the town where you can buy them and even carve one for your loved ones. Well it comes with a price though and they are not cheap.
